Beretta 92
Hey guys. Well, to be honest, I know basically nothing about guns, but I'm starting to think it might be a good idea to have one around. I hear the glock and the beretta 92 are both very reliable and accurate guns, what do you guys think? I think the beretta is a nicer looking gun but is it as reliable? and in a shtf scenario, how hard is it to find parts for the beretta... it sounds like it's a fairly common gun right? What do you guys think, would the beretta 92 be a good choice for a first gun?
thank you and please excuse the ignorance kristofer |

I don't like gLocks. Make sure you handle (and possibly fire if possible) the gLock first. You either love them or hate them. You really don't find anyone in between. A gLock will serve you well... if you like it that is.
I'd suggest checking out the Springfield XD's before you buy a gLock no matter what. I changed from my H&K USP to the XD because I was so impressed by it. Beretta 92F. I love mine, great guns and very accurate. Down side is they aren't quite as reliable as the gLocks or XD's. Not to say they aren't reliable but if I fire 300 rounds thru my 92F I'll have one or two easy to clear failure to feeds. With my XD I'll have zero. We have 3 XD's in the house none of them have every had a failure, with any ammo, be it wolf, WWB or hollow points. gLock is a close second in reliability to XD's, it's very uncommon for you to hear about people having a jam. I like my 92FS and if SHTF and my XD isn't available I'd have no problem going with the Beretta. Just isn't my first choice but would be ahead of a gLock. FWIW it's a very fun gun to shoot. Size wise does make it a bit large to conceal well, where as the 4" XD or gLock will conceal easier. I carry my 4" service XD everyday. It's a joy to carry. Before that my H&K USP 45 would wear on me by the end of the day. current prices on FACTORY magazines: XD9 16 round stainless new: $16.99 gLock 19 or17 mags new:$16.99 beretta 92f new: $12.99-$18.99 depending. source www.cdnninvestments.com |

Perhaps I should placed " :sarc: " instead of " :tongue_ma: " after my ka-boom comment. Sounds like somebody has a case of pistol envy :bear_tongue: As to design flaws, one could argue having a partially unsupported chamber is asking for additional problems. As was pointed out with the "metal fatigue and over presure" paragraph these things can and do happen... leaving the chamber more susecptable to catstrophic failure (as very evident in their 40 S&W offerings) is IMO asking for trouble. I've said many times the gLock isn't a bad firearm and one could do much worse. I personally think the firearms industry has moved past the gLock and it's something that is (once again) IMO highly over rated. I also realize this argument is like telling a 1911 junkie their instrument of choice is also over rated. Doesn't mean it's not a fine sidearm or it's junk, just it isn't the all mighty cats meow some would believe it is. It's an argument that cannot be won. Hey isn't this susposed to be a beretta 92 thread? :smokin: |

Early problems at the inception of the .40 S&W cartridge were due to shallow webbing of the case head in factory AMMO that was tested, NOT the pistol. Manufacturers have long since remedied the problem with the ammo. I agree Glock may have overdone it in the .40 chamber throat area, but it was done to facilitate feeding reliability. This partial chamber support is not a problem with factory ammunition. Personally, I would recommend an aftermarket barrel for shooting reloads in the Glock 40 caliber... There are many who have shot their preferred factory original Glock 40 in competition EXCLUSIVELY with reloads...like this guy: http://dfuse.us/ He is a mechanical engineer, working for a forensic firm which does FAILURE ANALYSIS and has testified in court on behalf of defendants in Glock cases..Call him and ask him about his extensive research on the Glock 40s... By the way, here are some comparative pictures: |
Re: Beretta 92
My first pistol was (and still is) a Beretta 92F - bought it when they were still made in Italy. I've never had a malfunction, though I don't think I've put 300 rds through it in a relatively short period of time. Still, I used to take it out on the range and through the shooting houses at Ft. Bragg when my unit there had range time, so it's been put though its paces.
Advantages (in my far-from-expert opinion): 1) Open slide - almost never stovepipes even if using crap ammo. 2) Reliable - mine's gone "Bang!" every time I've pulled the trigger. 3) Accurate (for a pistol). 4) Combined red dot safety/decocker Disadvantages: 1) Open slide - slides on heavily used military M-9s have failed due to fatigue. 2) Open slide - not good in dirty/dusty/sandy field conditions, as it allows this stuff deeper into the weapon. 3) Big. Important if concealment is an issue. Also, if you have small hand, it can be difficult to handle. That said, I own a bunch of Sigs as well. They also go "Bang!" every time I pull the trigger, no matter what ammo I'm using. And many of their models come in several calibers and are more compact than the Beretta. IMO, if you like the feel of the Beretta and you can get around the concealment issues, you won't be disappointed. Sigs are a little more money, but worth it. As for Glocks, I've fired a couple, though it's been 15 years or so. I just didn't care for them. Not saying they're bad guns, I'm just saying I didn't like them. The only thing I will say is that when I tested one out, I was using cheap ammo and got a few stovepipes. But I can't badmouth them because I've never owned any. Good advice previously to see how each one feels in your hand and go with your gut. Edit to add: I just ordered a CZ 75 P-01. I'll put it through its paces with crap ammo and see how it does. My FFL talked me into buying a FNP-9 a while back, and it stovepiped and failed to feed several times using Blazer Brass ammo. It's for sale now. |
